When one considers that the maritime environment is inherently demanding and unforgiving, that the density and complexity of systems found on today's ships - submarines, surface combatants, and aircraft carriers - is not exceeded in any other environment, and that the "information explosion" is in all likelihood no more densely concentrated than in today's warfighting environment, it becomes apparent that AMSEC - not unlike its Navy customer base - has been forced to technologically reinvent itself over and over in the past dozen years.
